Publishing Workshop

Publishing in established scholarly journals is an important step in the professional development of psychologists. The APA Publications and Communications Board is sponsoring a workshop, Academic Publishing: Advice from the Experts, to demystify the publication process and encourage productive manuscript writing.

Speakers include Susan Goldman and Kimberly Lawless from the University of Illinois at Chicago. The moderator will be Sara Young from the American Psychological Association Journals.

The session will occur on Friday, May 3rd, from 1:30-2:50PM in Salon 6/7 of the Palmer House Hilton. It is designed for graduate students and new faculty, although all are invited to attend. Advanced registration is not necessary to participate in this workshop.

MPA Fellows Symposium

Four MPA Fellows will present a teaching symposium at the annual meeting entitled, Contemporary Issues in the Teaching of Psychology. Speakers include Williams Addison, Catherine Haden, Mary Kite, and Eric Landrum.

The symposium will address a) a multi-method approaches to the effective evaluation of teaching; b) using inside- and outside-class experiences to connect developmental psychology research to the real world; c) effective strategies for addressing the challenges of teaching about diversity; and d) using psychological research results to prepare our majors for their future careers.

The symposium is scheduled for Saturday, May 4, 2012 at the Palmer House Hilton. It will coincide with other teaching-related panels, workshops, and presentations presenting by the Society for Teaching of Psychology.

Membership & Registration Deadline

You must be a member of MPA or register for the annual meeting as a nonmember in order to attend the conference in May. MPA members are automatically registered for the meeting. Undergraduate students should register in advance as nonmembers. You can join, renew your membership, or register as an undergraduate nonmember uing the "Join MPA" button on the left.

The deadline for joining or registering is April 17, 2013. Limited onsite registration is available at the conference, but it is more expensive and the lines can be long. So, please don't delay -- join or register today.

Your Aging Brain...

Dr. Gary Wenk will present Your Aging Brain on Food and Drugs at this year's annual meeting. His talk will explore why what we eat, and how much we eat, is the single most important daily decision we make that impacts how our brain and body ages, the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease and how long we live.

Dr. Wenk is Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience & Molecular Virology, Immunology and Medical Genetics at the Ohio State University and Medical Center. He is a leading authority on the consequences of chronic brain inflammation and animal models of Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. Wenk's Invited Address is Thursday, May 2nd in the State Ballroom of the Palmer House Hilton.

Research Grant: Mental Health

American Psychological Foundation (APF) seek applications for the 2013 Visionary Grants and the Drs. Rosalee G. and Raymond A. Weiss Research and Program Innovation Grant. These grants support innovative research, education, and intervention efforts that advance psychological knowledge and application in:

Ø Understanding and fostering mental-physical health connections

Ø Reducing stigma and prejudice

Ø Understanding and preventing all forms of violence

Ø Addressing long-term psychological needs in the aftermath of disaster

Jennifer Richeson to Speak at Conference!

Jennifer Richeson, Professor of Social Psychology at Northwestern University, will give an Invited Address at this year's Annual Meeting. Dr. Richeson's research interests focus on prejudice, stereotyping, and intergroup relations. She investigates the ways in which social group memberships such as race, socioeconomic status, and gender impact the way people think, feel, and behave. Dr. Richeson is the 2006 recipient of the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, is Fellow of APA, APS, and MPA, and was named one of ten "Women on the Rise" by O: The Oprah Magazine.

Why Students Love Evolutionary Psychology

Leading evolutionary psychologist Dr. David Buss (University of Texas Austin) will give the G. Stanley Hall Address at this year's MPA Meeting. Dr. Buss will argue that teaching evolutionary psychology can be daunting, yet highly rewarding. It is daunting because students often enter the class with misconceptions about evolutionary psychology. It is rewarding because many students experience a profound intellectual transformation. Dr. Buss will share several ways to increase the effectiveness of teaching evolutional psychology an inspiring students to learn more about it.

Too Many Psychology Majors?

For many years the APA Education Directorate has provided support for the National Institute on the Teaching Psychology. This year we are proud to sponsor the presentation by Dr. Jane S. Halonen, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences at the University of West Florida. Dr. Halonen has been invited to address Are There Too Many Psych Majors? based on her work with colleagues in the State of Florida and APA staff. This presentation is scheduled for Sunday, January 6 at 11:00 a.m.

Elizabeth Loftus to Speak at MPA

Elizabeth Loftus, Distinguished Professor of Social Ecology, and Professor of Law and Cognitive Science at the University of California-Irvine, will give an MPA Invited Address. She has conducted extensive research on the malleability of human memory. Loftus is best known for her ground-breaking work on the misinformation effect and eyewitness memory, and the creation and nature of false memories, including recovered memories of childhood sexual abuse. Dr. Loftus has served in many editorial and leadership positions in psychology, including President of the Association for Psychological Science (APS).

Grant Opportunity: Gifted Children

The American Psychological Foundation (APF) is seeking proposals for the 2013 Esther Katz Rosen Fellowship. This fellowship supports graduate students whose work centers on the psychological understanding of gifted and talented children and adolescents. The fellowship provides up to $25,000 for one year. Albert Bandura to speak at MPA

Albert Bandura, the David Starr Jordan Professor Emeritus of Social Science in Psychology at Stanford University, will be the Psi Chi Distinguished Speaker at this year's Annual Meeting. Dr. Bandura has made significant contributions to many fields of psychology, including social cognitive theory, therapy, and personality psychology. He has also been influential in the transition between behaviorism and cognitive psychology. Dr. Bandura is known as the originator of social learning theory and the theory of self-efficacy, and is probably most famous for his 1961 Bobo doll study.
